Physical Exam Q & A
How often do I need a physical exam?
It's important to have a physical exam annually, or more often if you have medical conditions that warrant closer monitoring. Your annual physical exam allows you to monitor health issues, get help with new problems, and receive wellness guidance.
What does a physical exam include?
Physical exams at Austin Square Medical Group are customized for your specific needs. While your physical exam will be specific to you, Dr. Facemyer will likely check your:
- Vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration
- Temperature
- Heart
- Lungs
- Head and neck, including your throat, tonsils, eyes, nose, and ears
- Reflexes
For women, annual physical exams may also include a breast exam and a pelvic exam. However, some women have their annual gynecology checkups with their OB/GYN in lieu of this. For men, an annual physical exam may also include a hernia check, a penis and testicle exam, and a prostate exam.
If you're on medication for a medical condition, such as hypertension or diabetes, Dr. Facemyer will review your current treatment with you to make sure it's working as it should. If you need to make changes in either medications or dosages, Dr. Facemyer can do so during your exam.
Will I need tests during my physical exam?
Dr. Facemyer may use urine and blood tests to evaluate and monitor your current health and screen for emerging issues. For example, a urinalysis can reveal early signs of diabetes, kidney disease, and other health issues.
In some cases, you may need X-rays or other kinds of imaging. For example, if you have chronic respiratory issues, Dr. Facemyer may need a chest X-ray to evaluate your lungs.
You may also need a lung function test, a stress test, or other specific tests based on your current health. Dr. Facemyer will only order additional testing when further investigation is warranted.
How do I prepare for my physical?
Call Austin Square Medical Group ahead of your exam for specific recommendations. If lab tests are planned, you may need to fast before your tests. Other than that, simply get plenty of sleep and wear comfortable clothing for your exam.
